Regulation, clearly explained.

Concise briefings on current developments in anti-money laundering and sanctions compliance, from practice, for practice.

AMLR 2027: what the new EU AML rulebook means for obliged entities

From 10 July 2027 the EU Anti-Money Laundering Regulation (AMLR) applies directly in all member states. Many obligations that used to be national will be harmonised EU-wide.

Key points Show less
  • A single rulebook: Regulation (EU) 2024/1624 applies directly. National deviations become much rarer.
  • New supervision: EU rules strengthen coordination between national supervisors and harmonise technical standards.
  • Cash limit: cash payments of EUR 10,000 or more in commercial transactions are generally no longer permitted.
In brief · 2 min

Firm-wide risk assessment: common gaps and how to close them

A risk-based assessment at firm level is the foundation of any AML programme. In practice it rarely fails for lack of will, but because of documentation and currency.

Key points Show less
  • Risk factors are copied wholesale instead of being weighted for the firm’s own client base.
  • The assessment is written once but not updated regularly or when circumstances change.
  • Which measures follow from the result is not documented in a traceable way.
In brief · 2 min

EU sanctions: documenting your screening properly

EU financial sanctions apply directly, including to law firms and notaries. What matters is not only the check itself, but proof of when and against what you screened.

Key points Show less
  • Screen at onboarding and continuously when lists change, not just once.
  • Mind the prohibition on making funds available: listed persons must not receive funds, even indirectly.
  • Log every check with date, list version and result in a tamper-proof way.
